Prospect Watch: Eguy Rosario continues to make the case for a return to the majors. Rosario added another three hits Wednesday, increasing his June slash-line to .378/.489/.784. He has reached base safely in 13 straight games and has walked as many times as he has struck out in June. The home run was his eighth of the year in 29 games at Triple-A and his fifth against right-handed pitching. While he continues to bash lefties (1.369 OPS), Rosario has also raised his OPS against righties to 1.039. … After one of the best stretches of his career through May, Tirso Ornelas had only hit in two of his last 10 games entering the night. He reached base all four times Wednesday with a single, double, and two walks, collecting his first extra-base-hit since June 2. Even with the mini-slump, the 24-year-old sports an .833 OPS while posting a career-best 16.3% walk rate and elevating the ball much more consistently. … On the mound, El Paso went with a bullpen day. While the six pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts over eight innings, they also got hit around. Jayvien Sandridge made his Triple-A debut tonight and quickly learned that the PCL is not the same as pitcher-friendly Wolff Stadium. Sandridge sat at 95 with his fastball while striking out the side, but the lefty also gave up two long home runs leading to three runs.

Missions 7, Corpus Christi Hooks 6 (10 innings)
Key Stats: LHP Austin Krob 3.2 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 4 BB, 5 K; RHP Carter Loewen IP, 3 K; CF Clay Dungan 1-for-3, 4 R, SB (9); C Brandon Valenzuela 1-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI, BB; 3B Marcos Castañon 1-for-4, 2B, R, 2 RBI, BB; LF Cole Cummings 2-for-3, R, RBI, 2 BB
Prospect Watch: The Missions pulled out the extra-inning win in a game that featured plenty of missed opportunities from both sides. Yovanni Cruz walked two and hit two to open the seventh, giving the Hooks a lead before leaving the bases loaded with no one out. Missions righty Carter Loewen came in and struck out the side to slam the door shut and strand the bases loaded. Loewen has not given up a run while striking out 14 over his last 9.2 innings. … The Missions returned the favor in the ninth, putting the first four batters on base to tie the score, but could not score again. The Missions left 14 runners on base in the game and went 5-for-21 with runners in scoring position. The club finally broke through when Marcos Castañon, who also had a double in the game, hit a sacrifice fly for the walk-off. Castañon is slowly heating up after a miserable April when he had a .628 OPS. He has a .765 OPS in June and reached base safely in nine of his last 10 games. … Brandon Valenzuela had a double to extend his on-base streak to nine games. He’s put together a .944 OPS over that stretch. … Francis Pena looked sharp for the Missions. The 23-year-old did surrender his first Double-A home run, but that was the only base runner he allowed over two innings. The hard-throwing righty has yet to walk a batter in June, and over his last three outings, he has yielded only three baserunners in 5.1 innings.

Jagger Haynes turned in his best professional start yet Wednesday. (Photo: Jeff Nycz)
TinCaps 3, Lake County Captains 1
Key Stats: LHP Jagger Haynes (W, 2-3) 6.2 IP, 2 H, ER, 3 BB, 11 K; LF Kai Murphy 3-for-4, 2B, RBI; RF Joshua Mears 1-for-3, 2B, K
Prospect Watch: LHP Jagger Haynes, 21, is quickly going from a feel-good story to one of the most promising pitching prospects in the Padres’ system. The lefty struck out a career-best 11 batters and carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning after retiring 13 of the first 14 batters he faced. After surrendering two hits to start the seventh, Haynes struck out the next two hitters before being pulled from the game after a career-high 97 pitches. The 21-year-old has allowed two or fewer runs in six of his last seven starts. At the end of April, Haynes had an unsightly 4.50 WHIP and opponents were hitting .478 against him. Those numbers are now down to 1.42 WHIP and a .225 BAA. Encouragingly, Haynes sports a 17:4 strikeout-to-walk ratio over his last two starts after walking more than he struck out through the first two months of the season. … The TinCaps offense only managed four hits, but took advantage of five walks and a run-scoring wild pitch to plate enough runs for the victory. Left fielder Kai Murphy contributed three of the four hits to break an 0-for-10 skid to raise his OPS back to .699. The 23-year-old Oregon State and Arizona State product has been a steady contributor for the TinCaps offense in his first shot at everyday action since signing with the Padres as an undrafted free agent in 2022.

Romeo Sanabria continues to torment Cal League pitching. (Robert Escalante)
Prospect Watch: In a 19-0 blowout, the lead story could be Wyatt Hoffman tossing a perfect ninth inning to close out the game. After a pair of other appearances in blowout losses earlier in the year, it was the first time the 25-year-old utility man has closed out a victory. While he has tossed 2.1 scoreless innings this year, he’s not shaping up to be a second-generation conversion to the mound; Hoffman has gotten his outs with a get-me-over pitch that is well below 70 mph. … Really, the story was an eight-run first when 12 of the first 13 batters reached base safely. Eight different starters reached base multiple times in the game. The one who didn’t, shortstop Chase Valentine, had three RBI. … Second baseman Jose Sanabria hit his first stateside home run in his 100th game since coming over from the DSL. The 21-year-old right-handed hitter came into the game with just 11 extra-base hits in 372 trips to the plate. … Right fielder Jacob Campbell had three hits, including his second home run to extend his hitting streak to seven. The former undrafted free agent has two doubles and a pair of home runs over the last five games and has both scored and driven in seven runs in that stretch. … Rosman Verdugo has also hit well in June. A headliner from the 2022 international free agent class, Verdugo had back-to-back three-hit games for the first time in his career. After a dismal May, Verdugo is hitting .313 over nine June games. After posting a 35% strikeout rate through his first 50 plate appearances, he’s punched out just seven times in his last 39 trips to the plate. … First baseman Romeo Sanabria (no relation) continues to impress, collecting three more hits including a league-best 16th double. He .318 batting average and .946 OPS are both good for second in the Cal League. The only player ahead of Sanabria is a top-100 prospect. … Jose Luis Reyes, 21, got overshadowed by the offense, but turned in the best game of his career. The Mexicali native tossed five scoreless innings, striking out seven. It was the first time in his career that he did not allow a run to cross the plate. The righty has 46 strikeouts in 41 innings this season.
The ACL Padres were not in action.
